Why CO2 Exhalation Breath Training Is Superior To O2 Inhalation Training

applied neurology breathe training neuro education Jul 17, 2024
The title may be a little too clickbait(ish) comparing CO2 Exhalation to O2 Inhalation Training, but I want to look at this from a NEURO BRAIN perspective.

While O2 inhalation techniques have their benefits, such as maximizing oxygen uptake and enhancing immediate energy levels, they may also trigger a sympathetic nervous system response, leading to increased heart rate and heightened alertness, which can be counterproductive in reducing stress.

The whole premise of Applied Neurology and the education platform we teach is to DECREASE threat (stress) in the brain.  So if we base this short post on the premise that we need to decrease threat in the brain to increase our body's capacity to do the things we want it to do, then CO2 breath training may be your ticket.

Why CO2 Exhalation Breathing is Superior to DECREASE stress.

Balanced Nervous System Activation:

Unlike inhalation-focused techniques that may activate the sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight response), CO2 exhalation breathing promotes parasympathetic activation, inducing a state of calm and relaxation.

Long-term Stress Reduction:

Training clients in CO2 exhalation breathing not only improves immediate stress response but also cultivates resilience to stress over time. This holistic approach addresses both physical and psychological aspects of stress management, benefiting overall health and well-being.

Integrating CO2 exhalation breathing techniques into training and coaching practices represents a proactive approach to enhancing brain function, reducing stress, and optimizing performance.

By prioritizing controlled exhalation over inhalation, trainers can empower their clients to achieve greater mental clarity, resilience, and physical efficiency.

As research continues to uncover the effects of breathing techniques on human physiology, CO2 exhalation emerges as a powerful tool for trainers and coaches seeking to elevate their clients' performance and well-being holistically.
