Jun 14, 2024Understanding and Addressing Recurring Pain: The Brain First Approach
Pain is an experience that affects us all at some point. For those in coaching, personal training and therapeutic professions, encountering individuals suffering from chronic pain is inevitable.
Many health professionals from personal trainers to physical therapists get clients because a reoccurring pain has flared up and it returned. Despite numerous efforts, traditional biomechanical models for managing pain often do not solve those long-lasting chronic pains.
It's time we consider a more comprehensive approach that includes the brain and nervous system, specifically the higher-order neurological systems, in our assessment and training. This approach has yet to reach the masses but has been practiced for years and is now making its way into mainstream training.
Moving Beyond Biomechanics & Into Neuroscience
Relying solely on biomechanical training methods to alleviate long-lasting pain has fallen short of providing lasting relief. While these methods might offer temporary respite, they fail to address the root causes of pain, leading to recurring issues.
This cycle of temporary fixes may seem like a sustainable business model, but it doesn't serve the greater good. It leaves individuals frustrated, contributes to the stress on our healthcare system, and has economic repercussions.
And if you pulled apart that first sentence, the words ‘ROOT CAUSES OF PAIN’ should have stood out. In our mentorship education, we go into understanding how to decrease the root cause of pain and how to get your clients to buy into this by getting them to SEE and FEEL the changes immediately.

The Role of the Brain and Nervous System
To effectively manage pain, especially chronic pain, we must recognize the significant role played by the brain and nervous system. Pain often has visual or vestibular components that are overlooked in traditional approaches. Ignoring these elements means that below-the-neck methods (biomechanical) will only provide short-term solutions.
To round out a statement you will hear us use a lot, ‘Everything above the neck affects everything below the neck.’ To get a deeper understanding of how our Visual system impacts so much of our pain and health, click the articles below.

An Education Shift: Neuro Training
A paradigm shift in our training and therapy is necessary. We need to focus on brain areas, visual training, and vestibular work to tackle the core issues contributing to pain.
By addressing these "big rocks" in the threat bucket, we can help the brain move away from using pain as a signal.
Neurotraining offers a pathway to rewire the brain out of pain pathways. This new scientific approach not only provides lasting relief but also supports a multitude of factors that enhance our health. By integrating neuro training into pain management, we can achieve more sustainable outcomes and truly support those experiencing recurring pain.

It is time for a new way of looking at areas our current education model has yet to help. We knew what we knew and now the education of this generation is here to take us to a whole new level. This is going to be a generational change and not the fly-by-night 'tool' we have come to be known in the industry. This will be and is becoming the standard for all health practitioners.
Understanding the complexities of pain and incorporating a brain/nervous system first approach that includes neuro training is crucial. It's not enough to provide temporary relief; we must aim for long-term solutions that address the underlying causes of pain.
By doing so, we can better serve individuals in pain, reduce the burden on our healthcare system, contribute to a healthier society, and increase the success of our businesses.
